Tower by Billy HedelThis Saturday, October 12 Patchwork will host the fundraising event: Celebrate! An evening of poetry with Jenny Browne and Marcus Wicker. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and admission is $30. Proceeds benefit Patchwork’s programs.

The reading celebrates the recently completed renovation of Patchwork’s tower. The Tower is the last remnant of the Washington Avenue Temple which was built in 1904 and once occupied the corner of Washington Avenue and 6th Street. Last year, Patchwork made a significant investment in the structure in recognition of its contribution to the beauty of the neighborhood and the diversity of faith traditions in Evansville.

The reading also celebrates Patchwork’s connection to the arts as it highlights the work of two nationally recognized poets with local ties. Jenny grew up in Evansville and spent two years post-college working at Patchwork through the Mennonite Voluntary Service. She says of her experience, “While at Patchwork, I helped write the training program for the Neighborhood Economic Development Center and coached a soccer club at Lincoln Elementary.  I also read a lot of good poetry and wrote a lot of bad.  In fact, I consider the ‘tower’ in the house at the corner of Governor and Washington to be my first graduate school desk.”

Marcus is a recent transplant to Evansville. He is an assistant professor of English at University of Southern Indiana and poetry editor of Southern Indiana Review.

And as an added bonus, Calvin and Nelia Kimbrough, two of Patchwork’s founders, will be visiting for the weekend and will be our special guests during Patchwork’s weekly worship service which begins at 5:15 p.m., Sunday, October 13 in the Patchwork Meetinghouse. A potluck meal follows the service. Anyone is welcome to join us!

On November 9, Patchwork will hold our annual Holiday Art Sale at which you can shop for unique, handmade gifts by local artists. The event will run from 9:00 am through 3:00 pm and admission is free. 30% of all sales will be donated to Patchwork to support our ongoing programming.
